Copper bonded earthing combines a steel core with an outer layer of copper bonded to it. The steel gives strength, so rods can be driven deep, and the copper gives conductivity and corrosion resistance at a lower cost than solid copper.
Bonded, not just coated
The copper layer must be bonded to the steel, usually by electrolytic deposition, so it cannot peel or crack when the rod is driven or bent. A loosely coated rod looks the same when new, but once moisture gets between the copper and steel, the core corrodes from the inside.
What to check before buying
- Copper thickness. Ask for the specified bonding thickness and a test report; many specifications ask for at least 250 microns.
- Bond quality. A good rod passes a bend test without the copper lifting or flaking.
- Core strength and straightness. This matters most for rods driven by hammer.
- Sizes and lengths. Ask whether the diameters and lengths you need are standard stock or made to order.
- Quality system and documents. An ISO 9001 certified manufacturer should provide datasheets and test certificates.
- Matching accessories. Clamps, couplers, compound and pit covers that suit the electrode.
Copper bonded, pure copper or G.I?
| Electrode | Strength | Corrosion resistance | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper bonded | High | High | Medium |
| Pure copper | Lower | Highest | Highest |
| G.I | High | Moderate | Lowest |
Our copper bonded range
Vivek Earthing manufactures copper bonded chemical earthing electrodes in 48, 58 and 76 mm diameter, copper bonded rods from 13 to 25 mm, and copper bonded lightning arresters. Each product page has a downloadable datasheet. We are ISO 9001:2015 certified; ask us for test documents with your order.
