G.I and copper strip, wire and plate are specified in sizes but sold by weight. Work out the weight, the metres per kilo, and the quantities a job needs.
G.I and copper strip is measured in length but sold by weight. Enter the section and the total length you need.
For wire, pick the SWG size. For a solid rod, choose “Custom diameter” and type the size.
For pipe electrodes and G.I pipes. Outside diameter and wall thickness give the weight of each piece.
Earthing plates in copper or G.I. Standard sizes are 300 × 300, 450 × 450 and 600 × 600 mm.
Weights below are our actual figures for hinged cast iron covers, with a tolerance of about 5% either way. Choose the size and the number of earth pits.
Cable tray comes in standard lengths, so a cable run has to be rounded up to whole pieces.
Backfill compound is supplied in 25 kg bags. How many bags a pit needs depends on the pit size and the electrode, so enter the figure your design uses, or ask us and we will advise.
Weights are theoretical, worked out from the dimensions you enter. Actual weight varies a little with rolling tolerance and galvanising, and castings vary with the pattern, so treat these as close estimates and confirm with us before ordering.
How the weight is worked out
Weight comes from the volume of the metal multiplied by its density. We use 7.85 g/cm³ for galvanised iron, 8.96 g/cm³ for copper and 2.70 g/cm³ for aluminium, which are the standard figures for these materials.
For a flat strip that gives: width (mm) × thickness (mm) × 7.85 ÷ 1000 = kilograms per metre. A 25 × 3 mm G.I strip therefore weighs about 0.589 kg per metre, so 100 kg is roughly 170 metres.
Why it matters when ordering
Strip and wire are quoted per kilogram, but your drawing gives lengths. If the two are not converted correctly, material arrives short and the pit or grid cannot be completed.
