Earthing on Jharkhand’s rocky ground
Much of Jharkhand lies on the Chota Nagpur plateau, where the ground is rocky or lateritic and dries out quickly. Soil like this has a high resistance, so a single short electrode often does not give the reading a specification asks for.
On these sites, longer electrodes, a higher grade of backfill compound that holds moisture for longer, or two or more pits bonded together usually bring the reading down. Testing in the dry season tells you whether the design is enough.
Steel plants, mines and substations around Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Bokaro need earth grids of G.I or copper strip and lightning protection for tall structures. The state also sees heavy lightning before and during the monsoon.
